We’re great friends who make great picture books.
What’s The Secret Treehouse?
We’re a group of children’s book authors and illustrators who’ve come together to share our passion for picture books. We have spent years encouraging each other, providing feedback, and generally doing everything we can to help each other elevate the art of visual storytelling. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how we’ve each grown through this small community, and we’d like to share that sense of community with picture book lovers around the world!

It’s not every day that a dream project comes your way. When Margaux Kent told me she was illustrating Poison for Breakfast by Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, I knew I wanted to interview her about her experience working on it. Luckily she said yes! Please enjoy!
Hello there! If you are like me addicted to stationary, new notebooks and all things made of paper, you will understand. Having a stash of store bought sketchbooks is not enough. I have to make my own special journal and customize its every page.
Hello, hello…time for an update! If you’re in the US you may be eating a turkey sandwich right now. Or like me, mushroom wellington & cranberry sauce, yum. Whatever you’re up to, or eating, we thought it’d be a good time to fill you in on our upcoming giveaway of portfolio reviews!
In case you missed it, this is the follow up to my post about sketching in Lisbon. Ah it was so sunny and warm! Can we all just pretend we’re going to vacay in the mediterranean this winter?
Hi, I’m Louise, one of the hosts and founders of Folktale Week. We hosts love a good story. Many of us also love history. And that’s why we made this challenge. Personally, I love nerding out, doing research, digging through old smelly tomes and looking on the 15th page of Google search. It’s fun for me. Oh, I need to draw Hansel and Gretel? Let me just spend 4 hours researching historical fashion for different German regions.
My daughter, Loretta, and I had the chance to travel spontaneously to Italy (we had some money left and some free days). I saw on Instagram that Jesús Cisneros was offering a workshop at the international school of Illustration in Sarmede!
Olá! If you follow my stories on instagram, you’ll know I was just in Lisbon, Portugal. It was a short trip–just under a week, and I always try to pack light. But one thing I never travel without is my sketch kit…
Hey everyone! My name is Kathryn Durst and I am so excited to be sharing some behind-the-scenes work from my latest book release, Grandude’s Green Submarine by Paul McCartney and illustrated by me!
You may not know it seeing the final spreads with everything pulled together so nicely, but getting there wasn’t easy. Especially early on, I worked through a lot of doubt and hesitancy while illustrating the book. When I look through my painted spreads, the early ones are much lighter, with color not extending as far as it should, or with an overall unfinished appearance. I was having to go back with digital tools to carry them through. And this was really frustrating!
“Sophie’s Stories” is out in the world and I’m very happy to share behind the scenes insights with you! “Sophie’s Stories” started as a personal challenge to create a story I could work on while making final art for my debut book, “Found You”. Tapping into that energy made it easier to feel open to fresh ideas…
Hi there! This is Sofia and today I would like to share a new book that has been released lately. Working on PENCILVANIA took the best part of my 2021, and while the world was going through the pandemic and isolation, I was deep in creating imaginary creatures that came from a 12-year old’s sketchbook. As an illustrator I had a job to get inside Zora’s mind and recreate her drawings from the time since she started drawing for the first time and till when she became more experienced artist using different tools and mediums. But before that…
Welcome to The Secret Treehouse! We’re so happy to have you visit and see what we’ve been up to. We hope you enjoy what’s already here, and also all the good stuff to come. We are a group of illustrators, mostly working on picture books - sometimes writing them, and always appreciating amazing art.
